The Glenbard South Special Olympic basketball team has been off to a strong start with a 4-4 record. The team has been hoping to improve its record to help the team qualify for state.

Head coach Michael Douglas explained how they have their work cut out for them to make it to state. “We have our seeding meeting coming up in January, and we think we’re going to get a competitive division. We have a pretty good record at that competition, so I am really hoping we can make it happen this year.’’

The Special Olympic basketball team has made it to state for the past two years. But this team has been about more than making it to state, has been  about the leadership and team growth. Some strong leaders on this team include AJ Tijerina and Melvin Hubbard, both sophomores yet this team has valued  every player.

This team has been made up of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Basketball has  more than a sport to many of these players has been  a chance to hang out with friends and get to be cheered on by a crowd.  Coach Douglas said, “The goal of Special Olympics  basketball– to have fun, be a part of a team and support each other through good times and bad.”
