On March 13th 2020, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum had to close the “Willi Smith: Street Couture” at the end of the opening day.

Willi Smith, a fashion genius, started as an intern at the couturier’s house where he helped in designing outfits for Elizabeth Taylor, a British-American actor. He made connections with major fashion influencers and models.

One model includes Bethann Hardison, who modeled for his sporty styles since the beginning. His clothing style was baggy with layers and buttons, large headwear, and more neutral colors with pops of color. He used accessories like barrettes, belts and buttons to add a more sophisticated look. In my opinion, this aesthetic is beautiful. I can see why Smith was such a popular designer in the 70’s and 80’s. His brand name was WilliWear Limited and he grossed over $25 million in sales.

Smith is one of the most successful black fashion designers ever. His work is extremely reactive and some aspects have stood the test of time.

Trends like belted jumpsuits, baggy pants, blazers and overall streetwear are still in style today.
