A season opener game has never seen as much success as The University of Nebraska did on August 30, 2023! That day, the University of Nebraska’s Cornhusker volleyball team changed the future of women’s sports forever!
Women’s sports are usually incredibly underappreciated on all levels. However, at Memorial Stadium, the Nebraska Huskers volleyball team broke that narrative. During just a regular season match, the team played for an attendance of 92,003 fans, packing the stadium. This game officially broke the world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event! The team exclaimed to NBC News, “There is no place like Nebraska!”
That was not the only record that was broken according to NCAA Sports. The team’s fan section also surpassed:
- 2022 NCAA Volleyball Attendance Record (18,755)
- 1999 U.S Attendance for a women’s sporting event (90,185)
- 2014 Memorial Stadium attendance record (91,585)
- World attendance record for a women’s sporting event (91,648)
This great game now sits at third place for all 24 NCAA sports greatest attendance records, just falling short of football’s record of 156,990 and men’s ice hockey second place record of 113,411. Fans showed their support on X, tweeting, “Husker nation, you’ve done it.”
With the power of nearly one hundred-thousand fans, the team had a clean sweep over Omaha in all three sets. In an interview with ESPN, Freshmen team member Andi Jackson reacted the turnout by saying, “It’s incredible. I don’t have enough words to describe it.” She also shared a team memory from the game. “We were walking out of the tunnel after the second set, and we heard on the speaker we had just broken the world record. Everyone was trying to stay locked in, but we were all so excited. I can’t describe how grateful I am to be part of it.”
It’s safe to say that Nebraska fans will be riding this high throughout the rest of the season, and August 30th will go down in Nebraska history forever!
