No invisibility cloak is needed to spot this fun show! Magic, mischief, and merriment are headed to Glenbard South’s theatre this fall, for their production of “Puffs,” a “Harry Potter” parody. The show was originally written by Matt Cox, and offers a humorous look into the perspective of the Hogwarts house “Hufflepuff.” More specifically, “Puffs” is a parody of the “Harry Potter” series told from the perspective of the Hufflepuffs— often-overlooked students at a “certain school of magic.”
Each year, the Glenbard South theatre department puts on three outstanding shows: two fall plays and a spring musical. The premier fall play “Puffs” will host its opening night on Thursday, November 20th. The spellbinding story will follow 20+ characters, some of which are meek muggles, and others wondrous wizards.
I sat down with the President of the Drama Honors Society, Liv Abbott, to discuss what the show will look like for Glenbard South. Abbott joined theatre her freshman year, in 2023. Since her debut in Anastasia, Abbott has played everything from classic fairytale heroines to ancient warriors. Without hesitation, Abbott named “Where The Wild Things Are” her favorite from her repertoire, since she got to step into the director’s chair!
Abbott’s parents signed her up for theatre summer camps as a child, unbeknownst of the impact she would have on the drama program at Glenbard South. Abbott gushed over her early days in theatre with “I fell in love, and have continued on with it ever since.”
As for “Puffs,” she is most excited about seeing each of the complex characters come to life. Many “Harry Potter” fans are only familiar with the core group of wizards and muggles from the blockbuster series, but Puffs introduces viewers to a whole new collection of quirky characters. “Puffs” is a unique feature for Glenbard South theatre primarily because you will never see the same show twice. “The script itself started as an improv script, so there are many different versions of the “Puffs” script and even different options for some lines” Abbott explained. “I think it is pretty cool, and I have never seen anything like it before.”
Abbott will play the role of Leanne, who she describes as “a quirky Hufflepuff girl, whose goal is to make a friend group with her fellow puffs.” Abbott shared her favorite thing about Leanne, which is her caring and genuine personality. “I like how unwaveringly kind she is to her classmates, and even though she is a bit eccentric, she is incredibly fun and charismatic!” Abbott is sure the audience will fall in love with each of the Puffs characters hitting the stage this fall, in this fan favorite spin off comedy. Whether you are a Potterhead or just love a good laugh, “Puffs” promises a night of funny business.
