On Nov. 20, 21 and 22, Glenbard South Theatre Department performed Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School for Magic and Magic. While the play follows three misfit wizards living in a magical world, the true wonder comes from behind the scenes.
When asked about the best part of the production, stage manager Breanne Crawford replied, “Definitely all the new opportunities I’ve had with this show … I’ve gotten a new perspective on how every member of a company works and their responsibilities. It’s really cool to learn about, but also to work together as a team on new things.” The show is always moving, from characters entering and exiting through three different doorways to constant costume changes and dramatic lighting shifts. And with the complex set and special effects comes lots of learning experiences. Crawford explained,“As a stage manager, I’m in the booth for this production calling the show. I’ve never been in the booth for a show, or worked with lights and sound to make sure cues are called and run smoothly. Definitely a learning curve experience, but I learned so many new things through this role.”
Luciana Moran, a member of the costume crew, agreed that there was a lot to learn. She said, “Having to do a lot of costume changes at the same time,” was unique to this production. ”It’s really fun how you have to take all (the costumes) off at the same time and put them on at the same time.” Due to the quick scenes and large number of actors, costume changes were hectic but painted a truly magical story for the audience. Bella Ramirez, a member of the costume crew, said her favorite part of the show was: “It’s always the people… they are the nicest people that I have ever met.”
With the combined hard work and creativity from each crew member, Glenbard South Theatre brought Puffs to life, and transported the audience to a world full of wonder, laughter and magic.
