Unfortunately for the cubbies, Chicago has been absent from the playoffs the past few years. A mix of injuries, an inexperienced roster and unpredictable drafts put the Chicagoland team into a divot. On Sept. 17, fans were finally able to hang their blue and white W flags, signifying the Chicago Cubs were headed to the playoffs.
On a random Wednesday in the middle of September, the Cubs had clinched their first postseason win since 2020. It was also their first full-season playoff appearance since 2018. They defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4, advancing to the Wild Card round. This single elimination series is played between two teams who have not yet solidified their spot for playoffs, meaning this was a battle for survival. The Chicago Cubs defeated the San Diego Padres in an exhilarating three games, earning their first postseason series win since 2017. As blue and white confetti streamed from the ceiling, the Chicago Cubs advanced to the Division Series.
Now comes the biggest challenge yet, defeating their longtime rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs struggled early, falling hard in games one and two. Not all hope was lost when the cubbies battled back and won games three and four. Fun fact: they destroyed the Brewers 6-0 in Game four. Unfortunately, their playoff run came to an end after losing 3-1 in Game five. While the season ended earlier than the Cubs hoped, the 2025 run showed significant promise for the near future. The Chicago Cubs are just getting started.
