Flag football is becoming increasingly popular in Illinois high schools, with more districts recognizing it as an official sport. At Glenbard South, flag football joined as a conference sport in 2025. Previously, it had been just an intramural sport. The team is  led by co-captains Geneive Corbin and Emily Everett. The sport has been gaining momentum within the Upstate Eight and many schools are now participating in this sport.

Glenbard South flag football completed its first season with a 5-5 record. While that may not seem like a particularly impressive record to some, this was still the first official year and many are learning the fundamentals of the game. The 2025 season also brought a wave of new talent, with several freshmen joining, expanding their roster to 23 players. For many players, this was their first experience  with organized football, making their record even more admirable. Co-captain Geneive Corbin reflected on the season by saying: “I think the first year went pretty great. Even though our record doesn’t show it, we got challenged almost every game and got a lot better in return. Some of the lessons I’ve learned is that not every game is going to go as good or as bad as the last and that I shouldn’t get in my head about it.”

Flag football is growing in popularity across the country, as the sport gains more recognition at the collegiate level. Some colleges offer  scholarships for women’s flag football, which gives individuals more incentive to start by participating at the high school level.This national momentum is expected to result in continued expansion of high school programs in upcoming years. Glenbard South flag football has created a community, so with only six seniors graduating, the program will continue to thrive and only get better in the upcoming seasons.
