What is a sport that caught people’s attention last year? Girls basketball. After having a successful season last year, they are hoping to have an even better season this year. The varsity team is led by Coach Eric Daca and Coach Timothy Klayum. The JV team is led by Coach Wade Hardtke and Coach Taylor.

Last year, the girls varsity basketball team was 17-1, thus winning the conference for Glenbard South. Their only loss was to East Aurora, which gave them a chance at regionals and their season ended with a game against Montini in the regional championship. The varsity girls finished the season with a 25-6 record.

As the season starts, there are 12 girls on the team: three seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and one freshman. The three seniors for the 2024 season are Allie Mizwicki, Sofia Alcala and Mary Kate Pinkelman. In reflection on the goals for this year’s season, sophomore and second-year varsity player, Rheayanna Ferguson, said, “My parents have inspired me through both of them playing ball and they help me a lot when it comes to the sport. My goals are to continue to get better for myself and the team, continue to grow, and have chemistry with the team. I’m looking forward to team bonding the most, the team dinners, team breakfast, and any team outings. They’re always fun to go to and help us get to know each other and have fun outside of the court. I’m most excited to play the teams in regionals. The environment and the competitive atmosphere against teams you’ve never seen before is great.”

All levels of girls basketball start their season with a Glenbard Invite on November 17, 20 and 21. They will go against Glenbard West, East and North. We wish luck to all levels of girls basketball, and shall cheer them on throughout their long season.
