Instagram is an app that changed the way young people interact with each other.

One month after the launch of Instagram, the app had one million users. Even four years after the launch, creators have been constantly drawing people deeper into the Instagram obsession by adding new features and changing the look of the app itself.

Instagram began its development in San Francisco, California, when Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger decided to focus their project “Burbn” on mobile photography. Furthermore, the first version of Instagram was launched on October 6th, 2010.

Users fell in love with the app right  way. Within two months of its launch, Instagram had a million users worldwide. In January 2011, hashtags were introduced on the updated version of Instagram. Hashtags  help users find others who share similar photos. In September 2011, version 2.0 was introduced with four new filters.

Moreover, on April 3, 2012, Instagram was launched for Androids. This was a huge step in the right direction for Instagram. It now allowed most smartphone users to connect with each other. This also lead to a very important event in the history of Instagram.

Less than a week later April 9, 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for about 1 billion dollars. This marked a new chapter in the history of Instagram. With a new creative team in place, Instagram updated the Term and Service Agreement in December 2012. The new Terms and Service Agreement allowed Instagram to sell users’ photos to third parties without consent or acknowledgment of the user, and this caused many users to delete their accounts and switch to similar apps such as Pheed.

In November 2013,Instagram started sponsored ads. In the same month, Instagram was launched for the Windows Phone 8, and the next step for Instagram was to add direct messages which was added in December 2013. Direct Messages allowed Instagram to compete with other photo messaging apps such as Snapcat. Now users could send private photos to their friends and comment on them. Now, over four years since its launch, Instagram has more that 150 million users worldwide.

Instagram revolutionized the way people interact with each other. New features helped users find ways to connect with each other. In a very short amount of time, Instagram has made its way to the number one social media app for young people, and all users have become obsessed with the popular app, causing this trend to never fade.
