Unsung Heroes

Maggie Falkenberg, School News Writer

Last year, Glenbard South’s BEU created an art contest to celebrate Black History Month. This new annual contest was created by Mrs. Harper, the Black Excellence United (BEU) sponsor, to give students a creative opportunity to bring attention to new figures in Black History. Students were able to submit their entries commemorating a figure in past or modern day Black history. These entries could include a piece of drawn art or performed music. The last day to submit entries this year was February 25th, 2022.

Last year’s 2021 winners included first place Matilda McLaren(sophomore), second place Hans Herrera(junior), third place winners Stefan Loest(graduate) and Evelyn Pak(sophomore), and fourth place Alesia Karari(senior). Their creative works showcased Amanda Gorman, Maya Angelou, Bass Reeves, Ida B. Wells, Dexter Gordon, Jane Bolin, and Marsh P. Johnson.

Mrs. Harper hoped that students who decided to enter would learn of new and different unsung heroes of our history. She also hopes that those who do not enter, but take the time to look at the pieces will feel inspired by the stories they depict and the individuals they represent.
