Summer volunteer work

Jessica Arnold, Assistant Editor-In-Chief

This summer, District 87 will be holding summer volunteer work opportunities throughout the summer. Glenbard Student and Community Projects sponser Gilda Ross stated, “Students who cannot get to volunteer during the school year [have the opportunity to volunteer in the summer].”

Ross has worked with Reality Illinois/Teen Advisory Panel for the Dupage County Health Department. This has been an organization that has placed together volunteer work for teens during the summer. “Once a week during the summer and once a month during the school year any student in Dupage County, grade nine through twelve, can volunteer.”

There will be no need for an application, “You have to have the willingness [to do the work],” said Ross.

Ross stated, “It’s fun, and it feels good… [it is] really important when we give back to others. We are a physical and mental being. When you give a gift to someone, more respect and [gratitude] can come of it.”

The summer work will range from a variety of things. One year a group of students presented a presentation to the Glen Ellyn Park District about the ban of tobacco use on its properties. After a group of volunteers presented to the Park District Board, all Park District property was declared tobacco free by the GEPD.

If one is not interested in the Glenbard hosted volunteer work, there will be  many other opportunities. “Givingdupage.org is a place where you can plug in interest, and it shows opportunity for your area,” Ross stated.
