Julie Buxbaum comes to Glenbard South

For many students, books have been the perfect escape from the stress of school. On Monday, April 11th, Glenbard South’s book lovers had the pleasure of meeting and listening to author Julie Buxbaum, author of Tell Me Three Things.

Authors that have either been on their publisher’s publicity tour or visiting Chicago for a conference have been available for school visits through Anderson’s Bookshop. Luckily for South’s avid readers, Glenbard South has been part of a group of schools that have been provided with a regularly updated list of potential authors that publishers may select.

To arrange for an author to visit, South’s Librarian Mrs. Mankowski will request an author from the list whose book has been published for readers in grades 9-12. She will base her requests on South’s schedule after reading reviews and often an advanced reading copy of the author’s latest book. Typically, authors have visited Glenbard South two to four times per year.

This time around, Mankowski selected Buxbaum to come for an author visit because one of South’s most popular genres among students is realistic literature.

“When both the publisher and Goodreads reviewers compare Tell Me Three Things to Rainbow Rowell, Jennifer Niven, E. Lockhart and Sarah Dessen, it sparked my interest, and I knew students would love it too,” Mankowski said.

During her visit, Buxbaum talked about her journey to becoming a writer and what her debut young adult novel was about. She also held a Q&A session, which included but was not limited to her approach to situations from a writer’s standpoint and signed copies of her books.

If interested in helping out with future author events and getting the chance to discuss new reads with those who share a love of books, join Glenbard South’s Book Club. Students from Glenbard South’s Book Club have been involved in organizing the author visits, meeting and greeting the author at the main door and in providing brief introductions of the author to the students in attendance of the event.
