The Independent recently won several awards at various events around the state.

First, The Independent inducted Emily Schmidt, Stasia Vasko and Jenny Yun to the Quill and Scroll International Journalism Honor Society.

Secondly, The Independent participated in the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association’s annual conference at COD. There the following awards were won:

Emily Schmidt: Honorable Mention for Review Writing

Jenny Yun: Honorable Mention for Photography

The Independent: Silver Certificate for Online News Website

Finally, The Independent sent competitors to the IHSA Journalism Sectional in a write-off against other area high schools. Several staff members placed in various competitions:

Stasia Vasko: 4th in Feature Writing

Alex Crouch: 6th in News Writing

Kathleen McMillion: 6th in Review Writing

Jenny Yun: 6th in Photography
