February 14 is a day couples and admirers faun over one another, showering lovers in flowers, chocolates, jewelry and stuffed animals. Inevitably, there are single people in this world as well.

According to the Urban Dictionary, Valentine’s Day is defined as, “1) holiday maliciously created to make lonely people extremely depressed, 2) a corporate conspiracy conceived by candy makers, rose growers, lingerie stores and jewellers to get people to spend money on junk.”

Therefore, the contributer of this definition must be bitter about the holiday, as many single people are. Fortunately, there are other ways to spend the day celebrating romantic relations other than bashing it.

As we know, a gift exchange between companions is a common tradition on Valentine’s Day. Having a romantic partner during the Valentine’s Day season, means buying gifts, and that means spending  money. Therefore, being single on Valentine’s Day is a blessing in disguise for one’s wallet and bank account. Seeing that there is a lump sum of money saved here, take a bit of it and treat oneself. Ladies can go and buy that pair of shoes that have been lingering in the back of their minds. Guys can get the iPhone 6 that is being plastered on every advertisement.

Another option to avoid the resentment of February 14 as a single is to celebrate with other singles, whether this means to completely disregard the fact that it is Valentine’s Day or to go out and live it up with the single buds. One can go about his day as if it is any other day, going to school or work and just hanging out at home. Otherwise, if one is more interested in having an exciting time, he can go out to a movie, dinner or even a party with his single friends. Even if one does not have a significant other to declare his love to on Valentine’s Day, it does not need to be a morbid day.

This being said, Valentine’s Day is not dedicated to couples to gloat about their relationships. This holiday could be enjoyed just as greatly by single people.

Swallow one’s pride and embrace the single life this February 14th.
