There are a lot of places within a five hour drive of Chicago that would make great trips for anyone looking for a vacation this summer. Each of these destinations are perfect for a quick getaway if you do not want to spend a lot of time or money on a trip.

For an outdoor experience, Starved Rock State Park is a destination for a weekend trip. Starved Rock is less than one hour and a half from Glen Ellyn, and the best way to enjoy nature is to rent a campsite. This is a really affordable option at only $25 a night for a campsite. If you do not want the full outdoor experience, one can stay in the lodge for an average of $150 a night.

When deciding what to do, consider that the main attractions are the many waterfalls along the network of hiking trails. The waterfalls are pretty, and it is easy to take either a short or long hike to suit one’s needs. There is also fishing, boating, a trolley and historical activities available throughout the summer.

Another destination for one, is about five hours away in St. Louis, Missouri. Though this is a little further of a drive than the other locations, it is worth it. St. Louis is city not that far away and it costs less than many other city trips. When planning a trip, one can not miss the iconic Gateway Arch, but there is also so much more to do. Enjoy the park around the Arch before you go inside. Take the time to travel to the top of the Arch for not only the view but the experience, then enjoy the museum below for a total price of $13.

Something else to do in St Louis is visit Forest Park, which is home to an art museum, a history museum, science center and zoo. All of these attractions have free admission every day. Another popular favorite for children and teens is the City Museum, a multi story playground built in an old factory from salvaged material. Before you leave town, do not forget to try toasted ravioli and St. Louis style thin crust pizza. Ted Drew’s Frozen Custard, famous for their upside down concretes, is also a must while there.

If one does not want the full outdoor experience or does not want to go to a city, consider Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. This is a relaxing vacation only about an hour and a half away. The lake is a gorgeous destination to enjoy the outdoors and have a hassle free vacation. There are also many beaches to enjoy the sun and the water, and in the evening there are many restaurants and shopping options. One can also participate in watersports and boating while there. There are also many golf courses, water parks and tours to fill one’s time if one wants more than just relaxing on the beach. There are a variety of options of where to stay including a variety of resorts, hotels and rental homes.

Whether one decides to travel a little further to a big city or stay a little closer to home to enjoy nature, any of these destinations would be a way to spend one’s time this summer.
