I watched the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas this year (it’s an annual thing) and it did not disappoint! The beautiful stop motion gets me every time. It’s fascinating to me. According to insider.com it took three years to make! It’s amazing watching all of the movements of the stop motion. The blinking and facial expressions are so fascinating. 400 of Jack Skellington’s faces were made to show all of his emotions according to Business Insider.

The songs were very enjoyable. They were written before the movie was made. The writer of the songs Danny Elfman only heard the general gist of the movie before writing them. A classic, “This is Halloween” is obviously my favorite. And when the kids sang “Kidnap The Sandy Claws”, it got stuck in my head. Of course, the boogie man’s song “Oogie Boogie’s Song” I could put on my playlist. All the songs were really great and really added to the movie. As a kid I hated when songs were in movies, just say what you need to say you know? But I’ve realized that it’s so much more than the dialogue. The background music, the vocals, it’s just amazing.

Finally the sub plot of Sally added so much to the movie, it was incredible. Without Sally, it wouldn’t even be a good movie! That’s a bit of an over exaggeration but it can be proven. Her whole argument with her dad/creator/scientist type guy and how she just wanted freedom was really relatable for everyone in a way. Everyone has something holding them back from what they really want. In Sally’s case she wanted Jack to notice her but she ultimately wanted him to do the right thing. This was the exact opposite of what he was doing, between kidnapping Santa to giving kids snakes as presents. When Jack finally realizes what Sally has been trying to say the whole time. They fall in love and what a happy ending!

Overall this was a great lighthearted movie whether you want to admire the stop motion or the plot. I give it a 10/10, would watch again on my list for sure.
