The latest beauty from the mind of Christopher Nolan is Interstellar. With blockbuster hits such as Inception and The Dark Knight under his belt, big things were expected from Nolan. He delivered.

Interstellar takes place in a dystopian future earth, which has become uninhabitable. As food decreases in supply and dust storms threaten to suffocate what remains of humanity, the main character Joseph Cooper is forced on a mission to find a new planet in the hope that he may find a new home for his children, along with the rest of the human race.

The movie itself is a response to the decreasing interest in space exploration in our own time. The opening scene tells the viewer that the films world is one in which the Apollo missions are regarded as false propaganda. In this world, space exploration is a waste of time, a reaction to the cutting back on the space program taking place in the real world in the beginning of the movie’s production.

The filming of this movie was revolutionary and brought to the table a new look at how movies should be made. It was interesting to compare Interstellar to other recent blockbuster hits also taking place in space such as Gravity which was filmed entirely using green screens. Many regarded this as the future of movie making. Meanwhile, Nolan chose to go in the complete opposite direction. Whenever possible scenes in Interstellar were filmed on a set instead of a green screen. Even for the space ships, Nolan had taken care to have an actual set built as much as possible, using minimal green screen or only using special effects as an add-on to what was already physically filmed.

On the more narrative side of the coin, the movies plot line is intricate and leaves the viewer reeling for hours afterwards. But upon a second viewing or assistance from something like the graphic below, the movie allows the viewer to piece together the puzzle.

Interstellar is definitely worth seeing as this movie will be regarded as a classic just like Nolan’s other works. If one truly wishes to understand each complexity, AMC theaters is offering an “unlimited ticket” for members willing to fork over a little extra money, which offers unlimited viewings of Interstellar.
