Every year the Grammys come and go. Most of the time fan bases are left arguing about whether or not their favorite artist was snubbed. Still, before that can occur, the Recording Academy must release their nomination for each category. That is what kicks off the madness and predictions until the actual ceremony.
This year the Recording Academy announced their nominations for the 67th annual Grammy awards on November 8th. Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan were the only artists to be nominated for all of the big four categories: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Beyoncé, Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift were the only artists nominated in three of the big four categories. Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tied for the most nominated album of all time, and Beyoncé herself made history by becoming the most nominated artist of all time with ninety-nine Grammy nominations. Charli XCX made a big splash in this year’s nomination, garnering two nominations from the big four and a handful of nominations from other categories.
But what about the negatives? Obviously the biggest snubs from just the nominations. Before that let’s discuss what exactly is a snub. A snub in awards refers to “a work or person that fails to be nominated or win awards, with whether or not a person or work was legitimately snubbed for an award has often been subject of public debate”- Wikipedia. The internet has officially dubbed the biggest snubs for this year’s Grammy nominations to be Ariana Grande, Tyla and Jack Antonoff. Starting with Ariana Grande, many believe that her album was trendsetting and groundbreaking, thus deserving more nods for the record. However, Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine” did not earn even one nomination from the big four categories. Many think that Grande was shut out in favor of some of the more popular albums, and suspected that the academy looked at popularity rather than the quality of the music. Moving on to Tyla, her debut album Tyla was submitted by her team under the R&B categories, but the academy moved the nominations into the Pop category. Now while this did potentially solidify Tyla as a heavy hitting artist going forward, it also stiffened her chances of being chosen. As a result, Tyla was not nominated for any awards at the upcoming Grammys. Her fan base thinks that the academy shut out Tyla, justifying the reasoning by shifting her into the Pop categories. Last but certainly not least, Jack Antonoff. Antonoff worked on and produced two of the eight albums nominated for album of the year. Both of those albums also garnered many nominations for songs Antonoff specifically produced, but Antonoff himself did not get a nomination for Producer of the Year. Many are confused about how two of the albums he worked on can be nominated in so many categories but he has not earned a nomination for his work.
Overall, the Grammys will always bring lots of opinions on artists and whether or not they deserved this or that, but this is only the beginning. To discuss the biggest wins and losses from the actual ceremony, come back on February 2nd.
