From dresses to drama, award shows have always drawn the public’s attention, remaining popular throughout numerous decades. One night a year, fans get to see their favorite celebrities on the red carpet. Award shows have been described as many things: entertaining, dramatic and sometimes disappointing. While always enjoyable, award shows can often also be controversial.

Some of the most popular award shows take place in the first months of every year, such as the Grammys, The Academy Awards and the Golden Globes. Earlier this year on January 7, The 81st Golden Globes ceremony took place. While seeing their beloved actors and actresses celebrating one another in their success, the event was entertaining for most viewers, but the start of the ceremony left the crowd displeased. The main cause of their dissatisfaction was the host of the evening, Jo Koy, who made insensitive comments and  still went on to defend his poorly-received. Bad hosts have been a frequent problem at a variety of award shows and often due to offensive jokes, one inconsiderate host can ruin the night. To try and avoid any conflict, some shows like The Grammys choose to keep one host for a number of years, as there has been little backlash surrounding their current host, Trevor Noah.

Arguably the best aspect of award shows is the preparation for them, during which guests are interviewed and show off their unique and elaborate outfits. From oversized suits to neon dresses, the red carpet is sure to show it all. Popular outfits from award show nights often inspire widespread fashion trends around the world. An outfit on the red carpet represents more than just clothing. Many celebrities wear bold colors or unexpected costumes to convey a message of who they are or what they stand for.  Men’s fashion has become increasingly more popular among celebrities thanks to award shows. A few years ago, most men would walk the red carpet in a plain black suit. However, since outfits have become such a crucial aspect of the media surrounding award shows, many men now work with designers to make unique clothes for the red carpet.

Recently, award shows have expanded their audiences and are quickly becoming more inclusive and diverse. The Grammys now include categories for a number of languages and cultures, which is important because, if they want to have a diverse audience, they need to acknowledge that music is for everyone. Many other award shows are adding more categories to increase the diversity of their audience as well. This positively affects viewership, and creates a more inclusive atmosphere. Award shows continue to prove themselves as more than just displays of glitz and glamor.
