Student Union Presidents
Meet your Student Union presidents
Osama Khazi, the Executive President of Student Union and member of Key Club, Students for Students and National Honors Society, has been responsible for most of the activities South’s student union has been involved in. Khazi lists some of the schools’ strengths as “a good representation of the students’ opinions” and an “easy flow of ideas.” Some hopes for this year are to increase school spirit days and encouraging student participation in Student Union. So far, Student union has already made an impact at Glenbard South through a number of fundraisers and organized activities, such as the Homecoming dance and the Lock-In.
Emily Maruyama – President of the sophomore class and member or the musical “Into the Woods,” Key Club and Future teachers is responsible for fundraising, raising money for the sophomore class and talking to the sophomore students to try to get their ideas for fundraising. She describes the sophomore class as “comfortable with talking to each other” because they all “know each other fairly well.”
One of her goals this year is to get more students involved in student union and to get more people at meetings. Only five sophomores have attended the one meeting so far this school year, but Maruyama hopes to get more participants with heightened advertising, Remind 101, etc.
Michael Thompson – President of the junior class, a member of Madrigals, speech team and newspaper, said, “[The junior class] goes above and beyond, and we definitely leave more of an impression than other grades have.” Thompson, the junior class president, is responsible for promoting the interests of the junior class. He has been raising money for the senior gift, which is a memento presented to the senior class after their four years. He mentioned the wall outside the Little Theatre that shows the tiles with the happy and sad faces as an example of a senior gift for a previous class. He has been responsible for the junior during homecoming week and any other student union sponsored events such as the Lock-In. He said, “I think we’re pretty nice, pretty outgoing.”
Thompson mentioned that the junior class has a lot of top athletes and top educational athletes. He has hoped for more open communication between students and administration and that the administration is more willing to hear what students say. He strives for more of an effort for that cooperation between the members of Glenbard South.
Marko Ivancevic – President of the senior class said, “That’s my biggest desire: I want to get more people involved.” Ivancevic, the senior class president, runs meetings about senior class fundraisers, discusses the senior shirt design and tries to get more people involved with the activities of the senior class. He said, “We have a very competitive class when it comes to grades.”
He discussed how a lot of the seniors are very involved in what goes on at Glenbard South and the athletes are very much involved in the athletics. He stated, “There is a group of people who are very, very active in a lot of what goes on at our school.”
Ivancevic wants to get more people involved in Student Union because he says it has been basically the same students since his freshman year. He wants the word out about homecoming activities that students take part in and about the senior gift. Ivancevic stated that he is not too involved in social media so he tries to talk to students in person about Student Union. He said that Student Union tries to do a lot of events to raise money for Glenbard South and raise school spirit, such as the Lock-In.
