Veganism: a better way of life

Shelby Westfall, Journalism Student

“Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as possible and

practicable, all forms of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other

purpose.”

Roughly only 2.5 percent of Americans are vegans according to a poll

conducted in 2016. For many people, going vegan seems like an absurd idea, but it

yields benefits that are unknown to most.

While it is not a cure for anything, it does help in the treatment of certain

diseases. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, “a well planned vegan

diet can help in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases”.

A typical vegan diet usually consist of fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, and nuts.

These kinds of food are usually filled with vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that help

keep people healthy without the processed ingredients and chemicals found in most

foods.

In some diseases like obesity, a vegan diet is considered helpful because it is

quality food without the chemicals and preservatives added in pre-packaged food.

Plus, vegans consume less calories than those who practice the American diet. So,

most people with this type of problem will often chose this diet due how nutritional and

low calorie it is.

Other diseases that are impacted by veganism are ones like heart disease,

certain cancers, and rheumatoid arthritis.

A vegan lifestyle is beneficial for everyone and a great way to stay healthy.
