Volunteering for the community

Kasia Szot, Writer

Have you ever wanted to get involved in your community? Well, Glenbard South offers many clubs that can give you that opportunity. One example is Key Club.

Key Club is a fun filled club that helps students get involved in helping out around their own neighborhoods. Mrs. Pat Remis, who runs the bookstore, is the advisor. But, actually the students run the meetings which are every two weeks on Thursday mornings at 7a.m., on the third floor of the tower in the study hall room. At the meetings, a representative will explain the volunteer opportunities and what each is about. Then students have the rest of the time to either sign up for as many events as they would like, or if none of them seem appealing, then they can just pass.

Many people wonder what kind of events Key Club has to offer to volunteer at, and the answer is many. There is something for everyone to take part in, depending on his/her personal preferences. The times at which these events take place are all scattered so everyone can fit something in. Different examples of volunteer opportunities would include helping out at elementary school events, food drives, community events and decorating the hallways at South. This club is not only good for students who wish to be more engaged in their own neighborhoods, but it is also good for students who wish to gain life-long skills.

As a member of the club, students will learn how to interact with people from a variety of different age groups, learn more about themselves, and what kind of person they are.

As mentioned earlier, Key Club offers an opportunity for students to get involved and get to know people in their own community. As many members of the club would say, “There is never a dull moment.”
