Homecoming week showcases Raider pride
October 10, 2015
Was it the sound of hundreds of student fans roaring in the stands? Was it the anticipation of finding out who the Homecoming King and Queen were going to be? No, it was everything. Homecoming Week was an exciting event that took place at Glenbard South this year.
First, the week started off with the Raider color run. Students gathered on the track early Sunday morning dressed in all white. Dye was sprayed all over the participants, and they took off quickly. Some walked the race while some ran the full two kilometers.
Following was the annual games night! The Senior girls won their tug of war, but the Junior boys defeated the Senior boys for the victory. These students would later face off in the Glenbard South Homecoming Pep Rally. Games night involved a lot of excitement and school spirit.
Freshman were decked out in blue, sophomores wore red, juniors wore white, and the seniors came out wearing black. All the different sections sat in their own bleachers but hardly anybody was sitting. The majority of the time was spent screaming and cheering on their fellow classmates. Junior Sarah Marsden stated, “The potato dance had to be my favorite event.” Fellow junior Claire Werner agreed, “That was a lot of fun.”
Early on in the week was one of the most intense events during Homecoming week was Glenbard South’s first Powder Puff football game. The junior and senior girls faced off against each other, and the seniors completely shutout the junior team, 20-0. Regardless, everybody still had loads of fun. “I absolutely enjoyed the game, and I hope there is another one next year!” stated junior Krista Kresphanji.
Homecoming Festivities continued with the pep rally where the winners of the spirit theme days were announced. Monday’s theme was Pajama Day, Tuesday’s theme was Dress Like Your Hallway Day Wednesday’s theme was Class Ages day, Thursday’s theme was Celebrity Look-Alike Day and Friday’s theme was Grade Color Day. In addition to recognizing the theme day winners, the cheerleading and dance teams performed along with the band and Color Guard. Most of all, Homecoming King Kyle Carli and Queen Alison Groppi were announced. “I was shocked when I won. It was a nice surprise though,” stated Groppi.
One of the most memorable moments of the week was the Homecoming football game. Glenbard South faced off against Fenton High School, 56-6.
Raiders always go full out when it comes to rooting for their fellow schoolmates. The Raider fan section dressed in neon clothing and ran flags every time Glenbard South scored a touchdown. “I felt glad that we were going to progress farther in the season. This was a great win for our team,” stated Ben Gonzalez, color guard member.
The week concluded with the Homecoming dance. B.96 brought its My Boom tour to the stage and danced the night away. Attendees can view photos from the dance on the My Boom tour website: Click here to view photos
The dance was success and over 400 students attended, which was a lot greater turnout than previous years. Students enjoyed their nights with a dinner, pictures, and everyone had a joyous time at the dance.
