As we wrapped up the regular 2024 WNBA season on September 19, eight of the 12 teams had started to prepare for the playoffs, which are set to begin on September 22. According to WNBA Stats, New York’s Liberty team is in the lead with 32 wins and eight losses throughout this season. They are followed by the Minnesota Lynx, who have 30 wins and nine losses. This leaves Connecticut Sun in third place. Unfortunately, the Los Angeles Sparks fell into last place, with a score in stark contrast of Liberty’s—32 losses and eight wins.. Many fans are on the edge of their seats, wondering who the winner of this year’s season will be.
The Women’s National Basketball Association was founded on April 24, 1996, before their first season in 1997. This makes it the oldest women’s professional sports league in North America. The WNBA consists of two conferences—the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference– both of which have six teams. The Western conference is composed of the Dallas Wings, Los Vegas Aces, Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, Phoenix Mercury and Seattle Storm. Meanwhile, the Eastern conference is composed of the Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, Indiana Fever, New York Liberty, Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystics. Each individual team plays 40 games in total throughout the season.
It has been confirmed that next year, for the 2025 season, a new team will be introduced: the Golden State Valkyries. A prospective addition to these current 13 teams, Toronto will be joining the WNBA in 2026. This will definitely create more competition between the teams, making it more fun and enjoyable for fans to watch.
So far, the Las Vegas Aces have won the past two championships in 2023 and 2022. Naturally, many fans are predicting their third win to come this year, but only time will tell.
