“The Wizard of Oz” is a timeless story, but that doesn’t mean that original flair can not be incorporated into its production. I was lucky enough to attend the opening night showing of Glenbard South’s “The Wizard of Oz” on Thursday, April 11th. I would describe the totality of the show as heartfelt, dynamic, and interesting.
Not only did the show, directed by teacher and theater department head Mrs. Jessica Keuth-Rahjten, boast flying equipment costing over six-thousand dollars to uphold; but the totally paw-some role of Toto was actually played by a real dog, belonging to staff member Mrs. Wallace. Toto’s energetic and clearly well-trained presence on stage immediately charmed the audience and proved that the show would be a hit.
The first act started off strong with swelling musical scores like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, sung by lead actress Danielle Allaway, playing Dorothy. Actor Jordan Quaid-Bowman made his debut in the theater department as Scarecrow, and Kate Costello confidently mirrored the mannerisms of the Tin Man. During several scenes, Myk Totty captivated the audience with their unparalleled charm and humor while playing the role of the Cowardly Lion.
All elements of the show went harmoniously together; creating a successful production with sold-out tickets within twenty-four hours on both Thursday and Friday night.
