Boys Cross Country State Meet
December 9, 2022
This past weekend, on November 5th, the Glenbard South boys cross country team hit the road for the IHSA State meet taking place in Peoria, Illinois. Harsh overcast the day prior to the meet challenged runners to a strenuous race, running through a muddy and slick course. Nevertheless, the boys team performed exceptionally and earned third place overall. Competing against 28 other schools, Glenbard South impressively came out in the top three with three runners placing in the top 50. Among the Raider runners two earned the title of All-State, including Senior Ryan Chung who led the team placing 23rd and Junior Jaden Fredrick followed closely at 25th place. It is important to note the rest of the team’s accomplishments as well, out of 280 runners, Junior Tim Jochum placed 31st, Senior Caleb Walter placed 58th, Junior Lucas Newman came in at 76th, Senior Matthew King placed 91st, and Junior Ben Zima ranked 165th.
Glenbard South boys cross country has created a name for itself with an outstanding history of successful seasons, even being one of the only sports at Glenbard South to win a State title. The 2022 team, coached by Douglas Gorski, carried on this legacy with their achievements this year, including earning first place in Regionals, fourth place in Sectionals, and of course, placing third in State. Gorski has been coaching cross country at Glenbard South since 2001, and has been the head boys cross country coach since 2012. When asked about his thoughts on the season’s end he stated “The Varsity team was the most successful and fun team to coach since I have been involved in the boys cross country program. Three-peat Conference champions and Regional Champions. I felt we underperformed at the sectional meet finishing 4th, but bounced back big in the following week when we finished 3rd at the state meet.” It is safe to say the young Glenbard South cross country team is a group to look out for next fall season.
