The Girls Varsity basketball team kicks off the season with their first matchup against the Glenbard North Panthers on Saturday at 7 p.m. Last season, the Panthers came out on top in overtime 43-34. After tryouts earlier last week, there are in total of 8 varsity players this season. Encouragingly they have 4 out of the 5 starters from last season returning this year, along with four seniors this season; Maggie Bair, Ally Daca and Sarah Cohen.

Coach Kasperek commented on the group of girls this upcoming season. “We won 6 regionals in a row, but I think this year is the best group of girls that I’ve had.” Last year girls varsity basketball had a regular season record of 23-6 and placed 5th in the highly touted Wheaton North Tournament. Also coach Kasperek talked about the strengths and weaknesses of the team she will have this year. On offense, their main strength is shooting three pointers and getting open shots in transition. This will prove to be very beneficial for them because the team will be making shots which gives them more time to get back on defense and set the tempo of the game. Their strength on defense will be man-to-man. Defensively, man-to-man can be very effective because it is simple to execute and with the right players and will can create chaos for the opponents. Executing proper rotations and communication also will be key to a successful man-to-man defense.

But the Raiders will struggle with breaking full court defenses themselves, and especially when they pressure the ball to create turnovers in the backcourt. Breaking a full court defense will not be easy, but talented and experienced guards should be able to break the press and bring the ball up the floor constantly.

With the additional experience from last season’s players hopefully this year the Raiders can get much deeper in the playoffs or maybe even down state.
