On Thursday night, the NHL took two of its teams to a whole new place; and that place was China.

Two preseason games between the Los Angeles Kings and the Vancouver Canucks are two of 6 games to be played in Shanghai over the course of the next 8 years. At the first matchup, over 10,000 fans were in attendance to soak up a milestone for a league many have not heard of.

The theory of NHL hockey in China is intriguing, but what is the league attempting to do? It certainly appears that the NHL may be taking off on the NFL’s premise of playing games in London on selected weeks. The NHL may simply be trying to keep pace with the more popular football league, while it also appears that they might simply be spreading the reach of the game of hockey.

While time will tell the future of the game on an entirely different continent, it does seem that the NHL is attempting to spread the love of the game. Game number two of the two game set will take place on Saturday evening as the Canucks seek a win after a 5-2 loss in game one of the series.
