The age-old question: Mac or PC?

Tony Raff, Writer

In today’s world, technology is ruled by two major companies: Apple and Microsoft. These two companies account for 97% of all smartphone sales, and it seems every computer today runs on either a Mac or Windows operating system (OS). What is more is these two Titans of the computer world do not live peacefully. Mac owners and PC owners are constantly trying to prove to each other that their brand is better, and neither wants to budge from their view. But which brand is actually superior?

The answer to this question may be disappointing, but in today’s world neither PC nor Mac has been proven to be better than the other. Five to ten years ago, this question was very relevant. Consumers could only choose one of the two, and they had to do everything through that OS. For example, if someone bought a Mac, they would have to use all Apple programs, such as iTunes and buy all of their songs on iTunes. However, if that person wanted to switch to a Windows PC, none of the Apple programs and purchases would transfer, and they would have to buy their songs all over again. This is what restricted people to their original choice and fueled the debate. But technology changes, and a major part of today’s technology is cloud storage, and cloud storage trivializes the Mac vs. PC battle. With cloud storage, files and folders can be stored in a user’s personal “cloud” instead of on a physical hard drive. With applications like Spotify and Google Apps, it does not matter which brand of computer the user has because both operating systems can support them. One could buy a Mac, put all of his files and folders in Google Drive and other cloud applications, sell his Mac for a PC and retrieve all of his files on their PC without hassle.

While the debate of Mac vs. PC was very heated five to ten years ago, it is simply not relevant anymore. With the increase in cloud technology, it matters less than ever whether a computer is a Mac or a PC. What really matters is the amount of storage that the user purchases on his personal cloud in order to maintain all of his files, music, photos, etc, across the operating systems. The Mac vs. PC debate is dying down and will soon be replaced by the next big question: which cloud storage provider is better?
