Give or take: relationships

Give or take: relationships

Alexis Rico, Bottom Line Writer

Relationships are a part of everyday life. What would one’s life be without a significant other? Relationships’ most commonly result to failure because of  violence, poverty and commitment. Although relationships involve lots of hard work and effort, they are something that society needs. Relationships are a part of human nature.

To start with, relationships are lots of hard work and can only succeed with commitment. Commitment is the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause or activity. When commitment from both parts does not exist, the relationship tends to fall apart. For instance, lots of teens in relationships are scared of being committed to someone because they are afraid of being hurt.  According to Woman’s Health, couples typically wait until the 6-8th date before they are willing to enter a serious relationship. A serious relationship is promising and thoughtful, in which the two people involved need to take consideration before making the commitment. For example, Huffington Post states that 8 out of 10 women wait 4 months until committing in a relationship. Indeed, both partners must agree and put the same amount of effort so that the relationship will work.

In addition, cheating causes lots of issues as well. According to Michael Raulins, cheating is the number one reason that relationships end, and from this trust issues usually occur. Cheating can relate to lots of trust issues which may be unhealthy for someone in the next relationship or even in the near future. For instance, 56 percent of relationships have trust issues because of being cheated on in past relationships. Through all the cheating and other issues going on in the relationship, it is very hard to have a healthy relationship when one has been cheated on before.

Along with hard work in relationships, abuse can also be a major factor in relationships. This was stated in Womans Health by Liz Walters. For example, abuse causes psychological and physical health issues. One in three teenage relationships have experienced violence in a dating experience. With that being said, lots of hard work and counseling some relationships tend to get over these issues even though it may be unhealthy.

Also, stemming from violence, money can be another major issue in relationships. In accordance to Michael Raulins, money is the second largest issue when it comes to relationships. Liz Walters also discusses how money can overcome a relationship due to poverty. For instance, 24 percent of relationships break up because their significant other does not meet the financial stability that they need.  So, poverty is a major issue in society today, so it is evident that this may cause issues between two people in a relationship.

Although there can be negative factors in relationships, society progresses due to relationships. According to the Huffington Post, Raulins states that society depends on the compatibility between men and women. Society depends on relationships. For instance, 1 in 8 students in a relationship say they do not see themselves single because they depend on their boyfriend/girlfriend for comfort. This is because society needs to depend on one another to make society more stable.

Furthermore, one in three people in America have been in a relationship before. It is natural and common for relationships to occur. It is also healthy to be in a relationship. For instance, 78 percent of people find themselves happier while they are in a relationship than while they are single. Moreover, according to Liz Walters, many relationships can be unhealthy, but with the right precautions any relationship can work and actually be very healthy for one’s well being. Therefore, relationships guide society as a whole once the right precautions are taken.

As a final point, relationships have many components to making them work. They are a part of life that society does need as a whole. There may be negative effects in a relationship, but relationships are about fighting through the difficult situations. Therefore, society does depend on relationships to progress.
