While Apple has dominated the phone market with over $42.1 billion in earnings in the last quarter, Android devices are not out of the race. They have also become more advanced smartphones, but people fail to see past iPhones and Galaxy phones.

To start, consumers have known for some time that the iPhone 6 would feature an A8 chipset, but they did not know all the details. Subsequently, Apple has revealed a few more now. It is running on second-generation, 64-bit, 20 nanometre architecture. This means that it has a 20% faster performance than the iPhone 5S with 50% faster graphics performance. Next, Apple has also modified the chip to deliver improved “sustained performance,” meaning it can avoid overheating even if it is running at high levels for a long period of time.

Apple has also added an updated M8 motion co-processor that can measure air pressure with a built-in barometer to calculate elevation as well as distance. It can also distinguish between different activity types such as cycling or running. Then, pre-launch leaks did suggest the possible specs for the iPhone 6 A8 chip. Compared to the iphone, Samsung has opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz, with 2GB of RAM and an updated Adreno 330 GPU. This is certainly fast, but it is not the 64-bit leap.

In addition, the big advantage for the iPhone 6 is that it is running the latest and greatest software. Apple’s iOS 8.1 software launched on the platform, and people who have the phone will be able to download it and get the best iOS experience right away. However, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat. That is not the most up to date version of KitKat, but since September, Google has announced the next update to Android 5.0 Lollipop that will launch in December.

In contrast, Apple has only said the battery performance of the iPhone 6 will be as good as or better than the iPhone 5S and that it will last for 14 hours of talktime on 3G. However, the iPhone 6 has a 1,800 mAh battery which is a substantial upgrade over the iPhone 5S 1,570 mAh setup that already provided an excellent lifespan. However, Apple’s battery is, of course, non-removable. The battery inside the Samsung Galaxy S5 is powerful at 2,800mAh and has an extraordinary Ultra Power Saving mode which can last up to 12 days on a single charge with all but the most vital functions shut down. The battery is also removable so one can have a spare or replace a faulty unit.

If consumers are in the market for a new phone, the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S5 are excellent choices. Both phones are more than suited to take care of their everyday needs, but there are certain areas where one may triumph over the other. If the deciding factor is the overall design of the phone, go with the iPhone 6. The smartphone is extremely thin and light. The aluminum design makes the phone feel really sleek and has a futuristic look to it. Furthermore, the iPhone 6 also takes better photos in low light conditions with an eight megapixel camera which may be important depending on how often the user uses the camera for indoor photography. On the contrary, the Galaxy S5 is better suited for hardcore multitaskers, and it also includes a heart rate monitor for those who need to closely monitor their health. It also has a larger screen which is important to consider when deciding.
