Jazz has been popular in Chicago since the early 20th century. Known for its intricate composition and steady tone, jazz is truly a unique genre of music. This week, jazz came to the Raider community.

Glenbard South hosted its Winter Jazz Band concert on Wednesday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. The concert featured both of the high school’s bands Jazz Band I, Jazz Band II, and Glen Crest Middle School’s jazz band. A variety of musicians performed, ranging from percussionists to saxophonists.

Some lucky students got the opportunity to perform a solo, such as Sarah Lawler. As a senior at Glenbard South, Lawler has taken on the role of being Jazz Band senior’s assistant director. She stood up during the last Jazz Band II song performed and conducted the group and performed a solo on the flute.

When asked about her role in the jazz band, Lawler said, “It’s a lot of fun. It’s similar to being drum major of the marching band, but it’s in a lot more upbeat and fun environment, and it’s a smaller group, so we really bond!”

Ian McGarrie directed the high school bands and Lev Garber directed the middle school band.

If you are interested in attending more upcoming Glenbard South Music Department shows, there is the Winter Band Concert on Wednesday, February 15 and the District 87 Choir Festival on Tuesday, February 21.
