Apple to compete in watch industry

December 13, 2014

Once again, Apple has not failed to come up with an interesting product that they feel will be huge in the technological market. The innovative Multi-Touch technology featured in current products such as iPhones and iPads has now been combined with the compact size and accessibility of a simple wrist watch to create the ultimate wrist accessory, the Apple Watch.

Types of Watches: There will be three collections of these new gadgets: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch Edition. All of these collections will have two sizes, a 38-millimeter case and a 42-millimeter case.

First, the normal Apple Watch will feature a stainless steel case and a Retina display protected by sapphire crystal. The watch can be complemented by a choice of a leather band, a Milanese loop, a link bracelet or even a band made from fluoroelastomer.

Next, the Apple Watch Sport will be the watch for those who want to have a watch that is comfortable for more than just everyday activities. It will contain an aluminum case that will come in either silver or space gray and a Retina display protected by Ion-X glass. This watch will be best complemented by a sport band that will come in many colors.

Lastly, the Apple Watch Edition definitely looks like it will be the premier collection of watches. The case will be made of 18-karat gold in either yellow or rose colors. The screen will be protected by sapphire crystal like the normal Apple Watch. The most elite collection of Apple Watches will be best suited with a modern buckle that will also come in multiple colors.

Features: In a nutshell, the Apple Watch will be an iOS device that can be worn all the time. Any basic iOS apps such as Messages, Weather, Stocks and many more can be accessed on the watch. Phone calls can even be taken as the watch will have a built-in speaker and microphone.

Two aspects of the watch that Apple has strongly advertised have been the Activity and Workout apps. It will be easier than ever to keep track of daily activities and workouts.

In the Activity app, the watch will tell the user things such as how many calories have been burned so far that day as well as how long the user has walked.

In the Workout app, the watch will suggest personalized calorie or workout time goals based on previous workout history. The app will also give reminders as to where the user is at in his or her workout.

Lastly, and most importantly, the ultimate goal of the watch, other than to be a completely different iOS device, is to be the ideal companion to the iPhone.

For example, the watch will act as a remote for apps such as Camera, Music and even computer versions of iTunes. It will also serve as a secondary method for making credit card or gift card payments through Passbook.

In regards to the fitness aspects of the watch, Apple will probably release an iOS update soon after the watches are released so that the watches can begin syncing to the Fitness app on iPhones running iOS 8.0 or later.

As far as the numerous features go, the Apple Watch will function very much like an iPhone or iPad minus the bulkiness of having either device. It will contain most if not all preloaded iOS apps that are put on all other iOS devices.

Release Date: The release date of the Apple Watch is not certain at this point, but Apple said that it will be expected to release in “early 2015.”

Price: According to Tech Radar, the price of the watches is rumored to be $349 to start, but with the multiple collections being presented, that price will more likely than none vary greatly. With Apple’s tendency to make products more expensive than the competition, that price may even end up rising in the near future. Then again, nothing is ever certain with prices today.

Is this the watch of the future? Or is it simply another temporary money maker for Apple to compete with other big-name companies? Only the users will tell that story.
